Do you deliver woodchips, and how far?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Delivery runs within about 10 miles of Lincoln, which takes in Rocklin, Roseville, Loomis, Penryn, Newcastle and the towns in between. If your address sits just outside that radius, call and ask rather than assuming no. Availability changes with what we have on hand, so the delivery itself is arranged over the phone rather than booked from a form.

How much do woodchips cost?

Call us for current pricing and availability. We do not publish a standing rate for chips, because what we have to deliver depends on the tree work we are doing at the time rather than on stock sitting in a yard. Tell us where you are and roughly how much you want, and we will tell you what we can do.

Where do the woodchips come from?

Accepted Answer

From our own tree work around Lincoln and the surrounding area. Branches go through the chipper on the job and the chips are delivered as they come, so a load is whatever species we were working on that day and usually a mix. Expect leaf and small-branch material in with the wood. This is arborist chip, not the bagged product from a garden center: it is not dyed, screened to a uniform size, or composted before it reaches you.

How deep should woodchips be spread, and how much do I need?

Two to four inches is the usual depth for suppressing weeds and holding moisture. To estimate quantity, work in cubic yards: one cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at three inches deep, or about 160 square feet at two inches. So a 20 by 20 foot bed at three inches needs about four cubic yards. Measure your beds, pick a depth, and call with that figure rather than guessing at a truckload.

Should woodchips touch the trunk of a tree?

No. Pull the mulch back several inches from trunks and shrub stems so the bark is left exposed, and spread the ring outward toward the drip line instead. Chips heaped up against a trunk hold moisture against bark that is not built to stay wet, and they give cover to rodents chewing at the base. The mound of mulch piled against a trunk is one of the most common landscaping mistakes we see, and it damages trees slowly enough that the cause is rarely connected to the result.

Will fresh woodchips pull nitrogen out of my soil?

Accepted Answer

Not in the way the warning usually implies. Nitrogen tie-up happens where wood and soil are mixed together, which matters if you dig chips into a planting bed. Used the way mulch is meant to be used, laid on the surface and left alone, the effect stays in the thin layer where chips meet soil and does not strip the root zone below. If you are preparing a bed for planting rather than mulching one that is already planted, use compost for that job and save the chips for the top.

Can I use woodchips from a diseased tree?

Ask us before you spread them, because it is not a blanket yes or no. It depends on what the tree had: some pathogens persist in chipped wood and are worth keeping away from healthy plants of the same species, while others are not a practical concern once the material is spread on the surface and drying out. Tell us what came down and what you intend to mulch, and we will tell you whether to use the chips or send them to green waste instead.

Question 8

Can I keep the chips from my own tree work?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Say so during the estimate and we will leave the chips rather than hauling them away, either piled where you want them or spread into your beds while the crew is still on site. The same goes for stump grindings and for wood cut to firewood length. It is worth deciding before the day of the job, because once the truck is loaded it is easier for everyone if it stays that way.
